Heard a security guy say most breaches start with a printer

I was at a small IT meetup last Tuesday and one of the older guys mentioned that printers are the number one thing people forget to secure. He said hackers use them to get a foothold on the network since nobody updates printer firmware. I went home and checked my own home printer settings and sure enough it had an open port I didn't even know about. Anyone else ever dealt with a random setting you overlooked on a device?

Wait, you found an OPEN PORT on your HOME printer? That's wild, I honestly wouldn't have even thought to check that. I feel like most people just plug their printer in and forget it exists until the ink runs out. Now I'm gonna have to go dig through my own printer settings tonight, which I was not planning on doing at all. It makes total sense though, once you think about it. Nobody ever updates printer firmware, it's probably the most neglected device in the house. Makes you wonder what else is sitting there with a backdoor wide open.

Doesn't it feel like everything we own is just quietly spying on us these days? I swear my smart TV listens to me talk about hiking and suddenly all my ads are for boots.
