Vent: writers keep turning every prompt into a trauma dump and it kills the fun
I've been in a writing group in Denver for 8 months now and every time we get a prompt like 'a character finds a locked door,' half the room writes a story about grief or a dead parent. It bugs me because a prompt is just a starting point, not a dare to go as dark as possible, and honestly those stories all start blending together after a while. Am I the only one who wishes more people would try something weird or funny with a prompt instead of going straight for sad?
