Tried writing a story from a random object in my house and it went sideways

I grabbed a rusty old key from my junk drawer and tried to build a fantasy plot around it. I figured it would unlock a chest or a door, but after 500 words my main character used it to start a motorcycle that shouldn't exist in that world. Totally broke my own setting, but it gave me a way better villain idea. Now I'm stuck on whether to rewrite the start or just roll with the weird tech. Has anyone else had a prompt object totally hijack their story like that?

My buddy tried that with a coffee mug and ended up with a time-traveling barista.

Gotta disagree with @davidb49 on this one. Time travel with a mug sounds more like a spilled drink and a bad dream. His buddy probably just met a really fast coffee maker. Some stories get better every time they're told.

Honestly, my cousin tried to make tea in a weird cup and swears it showed him yesterday's weather report. Tbh he just spilled it on his phone.
