That 4-month subscription box I forgot to cancel

Back in March I signed up for one of those writing prompt boxes, thought it would spark some ideas for my short stories. Paid $42 for the first month, got maybe 3 decent prompts out of it, the rest were just recycled stuff I saw online for free. Forgot to cancel and it auto-renewed for April, May, and June before I noticed. That's $168 down the drain for paper I could've gotten from a free generator. I get the appeal of having something physical, but honestly check your bank statements monthly, I learned that the hard way. Anyone else gotten burned by a subscription they forgot about, or do you have a better way to find prompts for cheap?

$168 down the drain" hits different when you realize that's like 4 months of a decent gym membership or a stack of actual books that could've kept your writing going. The real trick isn't finding cheaper prompts, it's setting a calendar reminder for the 25th of every month just to skim your subscriptions, takes 30 seconds. Honestly, physical boxes are just a dopamine hit that fades, so I'd rather spend that cash on a one-time prompt book that doesn't auto-renew.
