Poured hot coffee into a cold ceramic mug yesterday and it split clean in half

I figured mugs were basically indestructible till that happened, now I'm wondering how many other everyday things are way more fragile than they look. Anybody else ruin a simple object by using it exactly how you're supposed to?

Wait, you’re saying a mug can just break like that? I always thought they were built tough too, like you could drop them and they’d bounce. But I had a similar thing happen with a glass measuring cup last month. I poured boiling water into it and it just cracked right down the side, scared me half to death. That really changed my mind about what’s actually sturdy versus what just looks sturdy. Now I’m paranoid about thermal shock with anything made of glass or ceramic.

@diana_black22 you are not alone with that measuring cup story. Same thing happened to me with a Pyrex dish a couple years back. I took it straight from the fridge and put it in a hot oven, and it just exploded into a million pieces in there. Scared me so bad I had to clean glass out of every corner of that oven. What helped me was being more careful about warming things up slowly. Now I let glass or ceramic stuff sit on the counter for a bit before I pour hot liquids in or put them in the oven. It's a small change but it really does cut down on those sudden cracks.
