Overheard a librarian say she reads the last page first

Was at the county library in Portland last Tuesday picking up holds and heard the reference librarian tell someone she always reads the last page of a book before chapter one. Said it helps her spot bad writing early and never spoils the story for her because she forgets details anyway. I tried it on three novels this week and it actually killed my anxiety about wasting time on a dud. Anyone else ever try something weird like that to screen books faster?

Started doing this last year after a friend told me about it. Now I read the last paragraph of the last chapter before anything else. If the writing is flat or the ending feels rushed, I know the whole book will probably be a drag. It saved me from finishing two boring mysteries this month alone.

Wait you actually do that? I used to think reading the end first would ruin the whole experience but honestly you've got a point. I tried it with a thriller last week and the last paragraph was so lazy I put the book down after 20 pages. Saved me like 5 hours of my life.
