I spent 6 months posting prompts where the entire story hinged on one shocking reveal, then someone said 'this reads like a trailer, not a story' and I finally realized the real craft is making the boring middle feel alive, so how do you all stretch a single scene into something with weight without just padding it?

That commenter nailed it. "Trailer, not a story" is exactly what happens when you skip the slow parts. I read something once about how tension only works if the reader cares about the quiet moments first. If every scene is a huge reveal, then nothing feels huge anymore. You need those normal beats, like someone eating breakfast or walking to work, so the shock actually lands. Try writing the scene where nothing big happens, just two people talking about something small. That's where the weight comes from, and the climax hits way harder because you earned it.
