My old writing buddy in Cleveland asked why I always write prompts in second person
He said "you keep telling people what they feel instead of letting them find it" and I got weirdly mad about it for 2 days. I went back through 40 prompts I wrote this winter and he was right, almost every one said "you walk into a room" like I was bossing the reader around. So how do you write prompts that leave room for the writer to bring their own stuff without going too vague to be useful?
Ha, I've been that guy bossing readers around and calling it art. What worked for me was swapping the commands for questions the writer has to answer themselves, like "what does this room smell like" instead of "you smell smoke." Still gives them a handle to grab without me telling them how to feel.
