I finally fixed my problem with flat protagonist arcs using a $5 notebook trick
I kept getting stuck where my main character just felt boring and static, then I tried writing their entire backstory as a single timeline on a page in that cheap spiral notebook. It showed me exactly where their personality jumped from whiny to brave with no explanation. Anyone else use a weird low-tech fix for character development?

Overthinking a notebook purchase"? I mean, aren't we all a little extra when it comes to fixing our writing problems? Honestly I've done way weirder stuff, like mapping character flaws on sticky notes all over my wall. That timeline trick is actually genius though, I can see how it shows the gaps in a character's arc really clearly. Sometimes you just need a cheap physical object to make your brain work differently, you know?
