Does a detailed plot outline kill the fun or save the story? I flip-flopped after 3 tries
I used to pants everything, wrote 40k words that went nowhere in a month. Then I tried a full chapter-by-chapter outline and it felt like homework, but the draft actually finished. Which side do you land on, and does the genre change your answer?

Did you find the outline got easier once you were past the first few chapters? I feel you on the homework feeling, but for me it was mostly front loaded. Typing out 40k that went nowhere would wreck me way more than a boring spreadsheet day. I do think genre matters though, my mystery basically needs a map or the clues go nowhere, but when I tried outlining a romance it killed all the spark.
