Does a detailed plot outline kill the fun or save the story? I flip-flopped after 3 tries

I used to pants everything, wrote 40k words that went nowhere in a month. Then I tried a full chapter-by-chapter outline and it felt like homework, but the draft actually finished. Which side do you land on, and does the genre change your answer?
