Came back to a prompt file from 2019 and hit 31 unfinished story openers
I keep a running file of writing prompts called openers.txt and last night I scrolled to the bottom and actually counted what was in there. 31 pieces, and the oldest one is from October 2019, a two sentence hook about a woman finding her own name in a lost and found box. I thought I had maybe a dozen. Some of them are just one line. Others run 200 words before they stop cold mid sentence, which is somehow worse, because you can see I was excited and then just quit. Three of them are the same story idea written three different ways, which means I keep circling back to it and never commit. I am posting this here as a heads up, because if you keep prompts in a file like I do and you think it is a small pile, count it. Mine was not a small pile. What do you all do with the old ones, dig them out and finish them or just let them sit?
Digging through old stuff like that is worth it once in a while. Did the same with a folder of half-started songs from years back and pulled out five or six that just needed a fresh look. Finished two of them in a weekend and they turned out better than the new stuff I was writing at the time. Pick the three versions of that same idea and read them side by side, then keep whatever lines still hold up and toss the rest.
