A rainy afternoon at the library in Tacoma flipped my whole writing process

I was stuck on a story for weeks, but then I saw a kid's drawing of a dragon with a jetpack taped to the wall. I started writing from that image instead of my outline and finished the chapter in two hours. Has anyone else had a random object or picture kickstart a whole new piece?

That's a cool story. So the drawing gave you a whole new starting point. Did it change the story's direction completely, or did you find a way to make the dragon with a jetpack fit into your original plan? I'm curious if the random thing just gave you energy or if it actually rewired the plot.

Yeah that happened with a project I was working on once, just went a totally different direction and it worked out better.

Oh man, it totally rewired the plot. The dragon with a jetpack wasn't just some side thing, it became the main character. My original plan got tossed out the window because this idea was way more fun. Sometimes you just have to go with the weird stuff, you know? It makes the whole story feel fresh.
