Tbh, a job last week in Philly had me arguing with the rigger about using a spreader bar versus just two slings. He said the bar was overkill and added setup time, I said it was safer for the load. What's your take?

Natural balance" reminds me of a time we almost tipped a generator.

That rigger in Philly was wrong, the spreader bar is always the safer call.

The spreader bar is always the safer call" is a pretty big blanket statement. In my experience, it really depends on the load and the pick points. A spreader bar can introduce some serious stability issues if you're lifting something that's not evenly weighted or if the rigging isn't perfectly centered. Sometimes a simple sling setup is actually safer because it lets the load find its natural balance. I've seen guys get into trouble by automatically reaching for a spreader bar without thinking it through first.
