Switched from friction pads to synthetic wedges on my tower crane after 12 years

I used to use the old school friction pads for leveling my crane on uneven ground. They worked fine but took forever to adjust and always slipped a bit. About 6 months ago my foreman made me try synthetic wedges on a job in Omaha. Now setup time dropped from 45 minutes to 20 and the crane feels solid as a rock. Has anyone else made this switch or are you still using the old pads?

Jessie, it's a bigger deal than most people think. The time savings alone is huge when you're running a crew on the clock. But the main thing is how much more secure the load feels. With friction pads you always had that little bit of give that made the crane wobble on uneven ground. Synthetic wedges lock in tight and don't budge at all. Once you use them for a week you won't want to go back to the old way.

Is it really that big of a deal?
