Spent $400 on a training course that didn't teach me anything new

Last winter I signed up for a crane operator certification prep class from a place in Denver. Cost me $400 and two weekends of my time. The instructor just read from a textbook and didn't have any real experience with mobile cranes, only tower cranes. I learned more from watching YouTube videos and talking to guys on the job site. Has anyone else wasted money on a training program that looked good on paper but fell flat in person? What warning signs should I look for next time before I hand over my cash?

Honestly I've dropped cash on worse stuff, like a "masterclass" on public speaking that basically taught me to just breathe and pretend I'm talking to a friend. $400 for a textbook reader sounds rough though, at least you didn't fall asleep and snore loud enough for the whole class to hear like I did once.

@abby_robinson58 snoring in class beats paying $400 for a machine that just reads out loud like a robot with zero personality.
