Old timer at the yard told me to stop rushing my rigging setup
I was working a job in Raleigh last fall, lifting some heavy HVAC units onto a roof. This guy, probably 60 plus years in the trade, just walked over and said 'you're gonna drop that because you tied it like a kid with shoelaces.' I was mad at first but he showed me how to double check every turn and make sure the weight was dead center. Now I take an extra 10 minutes on every lift (even the small ones) and I haven't had a single load shift on me since. Anybody else have an old head set them straight like that?

Ole boy who taught me tree work used to tell me the same thing... "Slow down, make it tight, or you'll be picking splinters out of your teeth." I rush on a big limb one time, missed a half hitch, and that thing swung like a pendulum into my bucket truck. Cost me 800 bucks in body work. Now I take that extra time too, double checking every wrap and pinch. Some lessons just gotta be paid for before they stick.

Got a buddy who tried to rig a big limb off a roof one time. He thought he could save time by skipping the safety line on his chainsaw. The thing kicked back and whacked him right in the shin. Busted his leg up bad enough he wore a boot for three months. Now he double checks every knot and makes sure his saw is cut off before he even breathes. Cost him way more than 800 bucks in medical bills and lost work time.

@emery879 that pendulum swing story gave me chills. 800 bucks for body work is rough but at least that can be fixed, a leg not so much. Your buddy got lucky it was his shin and not something worse.
