I finally climbed down after 6 hours in the seat and realized I miss the old hand signals
A kid I trained maybe 12 years back called me up last Tuesday to talk about a pour we did together on a job over in Gary, Indiana. He brought up how we used to run everything on hand signals and a two way radio that half the time didn't work, and now he's got a screen in the cab telling him the load weight and the wind speed and where the tag line guy is standing. I laughed about it but then I sat with it a while. Back when I started in '94 we learned to feel the load through the sticks and you knew a guy was good by how he read your hands from 80 feet down. Now nobody even looks up at you, they just watch the monitor. I'm not saying the tech is bad, it's probably saved a few guys, but something got lost in there. Any of you old hands still run a crew that works off signals instead of screens?
