Found out the average crane operator age is 48, got me thinking about the skill gap

I was reading through the NCCCO safety bulletin last Tuesday and saw that the median age for operators is around 48 years old. That surprised me because I figured it would be closer to 40. It also makes me wonder if we are doing enough to bring younger people into the trade. My local union hall in Cleveland ran 3 apprentice classes last year, but I know a few older guys who say the young ones skip the hand signals and rely on radios too much. On the flip side, the younger guys bring better tech habits and learn load charts faster on a tablet. Is the age difference really a problem, or is it just how every generation talks about the next one? Has anyone else noticed a split in how crews run things now?
