Finally came around on the 2-way radio discipline thing

I used to think the guys who narrate every move on the radio were just bored. Then last Tuesday on a 140 ton job in Columbus, I heard a spotter call out a swing path issue I would have missed completely. He was talking to the ground crew, not me, but it saved me from a bad blind spot near a power line. Now I give a quick heads up on every load movement instead of staying silent. It feels redundant but it's already kept two guys from stepping into my counterweight zone. Anyone else find that talking more on site just makes everyone safer?

Start treating it like a heads up instead of a narration. I throw out "swing right, load coming your way" and "backing up, stay clear" even when I think nobody's near. Last month my oiler caught a guy walking behind my rig just because I said something. The quiet ones are the ones that get you. Keep it short and keep it moving, nobody wants a play by play, they just want to know where you are.
