Am I wrong for skipping the daily walkaround?
I started running my own crew about 3 years ago and I stopped doing the full pre-shift inspection on our 50 ton Grove every single morning. The company manual says to do it and most guys here swear by it, but honestly after 15 years on the iron I know what to listen for and what to look at quick. Last month a new oiler called me out on it in front of the foreman at a job in Tacoma, said I was setting a bad example. I told him I check the cable, the brakes, and the outriggers before every pick anyway, but I dont climb the whole boom or check every pin like the book says. He didnt let it go and now the safety guy wants to ride along with me next Tuesday. Is there anybody else who runs a lean inspection and has it work out, or am I actually the problem here and just lucky so far? Ive never had a failure, but maybe that doesnt mean anything yet.
