Vent: Everyone says meet at a police station, but that got me banned from a deal in Reno
I sold a $300 Nintendo Switch on Craigslist two weeks ago and the buyer insisted we meet at the Reno police station on Wells Ave. The officer at the front desk told us they don't allow internet transactions in the lobby anymore, so I had to stand in the parking lot with a stranger holding cash. The deal went fine but a cop came out and told me if I did it again he'd write me up for loitering. I found a Facebook post from someone else in Sparks who got the same warning. Does meeting at a police station even work in other cities or is that just outdated advice?
Wait, they actually kicked you out of the lobby? That's so frustrating, especially since everyone and their mom tells you to meet at a police station for safety. I did a deal in Sacramento last year and the cops there were totally fine with us using the parking lot, they even had cameras pointed at the "safe exchange zone" spots. But I've heard from people in other towns that some departments straight up stopped letting folks do it, or they never had a program in the first place. It's rough because you're trying to do the right thing and then you get treated like a problem. So now what are we supposed to do, meet at a Dunkin and hope for the best?
