TIL a $40 curb alert dresser in Cleveland cost me 5 weekends and a tetanus shot
I grabbed a free dresser off a curb in Cleveland last month because the listing said "minor cosmetic wear" and I figured a couple hours of sanding would fix it. That was 5 weekends ago. First I found the drawers were held together with wood glue and hope, so I had to pull every single one apart. Then the "minor wear" turned out to be water damage that went halfway up the back panel, which I did not see until I flipped it over in my garage. I bought clamps, wood filler, and a respirator, and I still had to make 4 trips to the hardware store on W 25th. The part that really got me was the rusty nail hiding in the bottom rail. It went through my glove and into my palm, so I spent 2 hours in an urgent care waiting room for a tetanus shot. My wife keeps asking why I do not just buy a new dresser for $150 at IKEA. Honestly, I am starting to think she is the smart one here, but I want to know if anyone else has turned a free curb find into a month long project that you cannot walk away from now.
