The Saturday I Sold a Grill and the Buyer Brought His Own Dad to Negotiate
Back in 2016 I listed a used Weber kettle on the local site for $40 and said firm in the ad. A guy shows up with his father, who immediately starts pointing out rust spots and offers me $15 in front of his own son. I held at $40, they drove off, and then the son called me two hours later to apologize and ask if he could come back alone. He paid full price and we ended up talking about his new apartment for twenty minutes. Has anyone else had a parent hijack a deal like that?
The real issue here is the dad put his own son in a terrible spot and probably did not even realize it. That kid had to sit there and watch his father lowball a stranger over a $40 grill, and then he had to call you back and apologize for a grown man's behavior. That is a weird kind of shame to carry. I bet the dad thought he was being helpful, like he was teaching his son to haggle or save money, but all he did was make his kid look bad. The son showing up alone later was really him taking back control of his own deal, his own money, his own apartment. Parents who jump into their adult kids' business like that usually do not see the message they are sending, which is "I do not trust you to handle this.
