Drove to Lawrence, Kansas for a $40 desk and spent 4 hours trapped in a snowstorm
Back in 2016 I answered a Craigslist ad for a cheap oak desk, and the seller said pickup was cash only at his storage unit off 23rd street. What should have been a 40 minute round trip turned into 4 hours because a surprise snowstorm shut down I-70 and my phone died with his address still on the screen. I sat in a gas station parking lot for 2 hours waiting for the plows, then the guy stopped answering his phone because he fell asleep. When I finally got there he had already given the desk to somebody else, but he felt bad and handed me a free folding chair. These days you can message a seller, pay on an app, and track the whole thing in 10 minutes with zero risk of freezing. I still have that stupid chair though, so was it a win or a loss? Anybody else get burned by weather or a dead phone back in the old Craigslist days?
That desk was probably a piece of junk anyway and you saved yourself the hassle of hauling it home. Buying stuff cheap off strangers was always a gamble, pay now or hope the guy shows up, and a free chair that's lasted eight years is honestly a better deal than most desks. Sounds like a win to me, just a cold and annoying one.
