I switched from selling on Etsy to my own site and saw a huge change in 4 months
Back in March I opened a little Shopify store for my painted wooden signs. My Etsy fees were eating up about 30% of each sale after listing costs and advertising. After making the switch my profit on a $40 sign jumped from maybe $22 to $32. The trade off was I had to learn how to drive my own traffic on Instagram and Facebook groups. Has anyone else found the money difference worth the extra marketing work?

It's like when restaurants started doing their own delivery instead of using DoorDash. You save on fees but now you have to hire drivers and handle complaints yourself. Same deal with your shop. You cut out the middleman but now you're the one finding customers instead of Etsy bringing them to you. Worth it in the long run if you can handle the extra hustle.

Worth it in the long run if you can handle the extra hustle" - famous last words before I spend three hours fixing my own site's checkout bug at 2am, right @phoenix_singh? But yeah, nobody's stealing my cut but me, so I'll take the tradeoff.

That DoorDash comparison @phoenix_singh made is spot on. It's basically trading one headache for another, but at least the headache you pick lets you keep more of your money. Better the devil you know with your own checkout bugs than losing 30% to fees you can't control.
