Hot take: charging by the hour for freelance work is killing your craft business slowly
I started doing wedding calligraphy from my apartment in Austin last spring and charged $25 an hour like everyone on YouTube says. I made $180 on my first big order and spent 14 hours on it because I kept second-guessing every letter. Then a friend who runs a bakery out of her garage said she switched to flat pricing per cake and doubled her take in 2 months. So I tried it, $12 per place card, $75 for a full invitation suite, and suddenly I stopped rushing and started making $400 a week. The problem is hourly billing punishes you for getting good at your thing. If you get faster, you just make less. Anyone else switch to flat pricing and see a jump, or did it blow up in your face when a client wanted 30 revisions?
