Walked past the Denver airport mural last month and something felt off

I was passing through the Denver airport for a layover and stopped to look at that big Mustang mural with the glass eyes. The way the eyes follow you around the room is creepy enough, but I swear the kid in the painting had a different expression than what I saw in photos online. Does anyone else think that thing is weird or am I just reading too much into old art?

Compare the kid's expression to the painting's original reference photos online. What part of his face changed exactly? Curious if the mouth or eyes shifted more.

Honestly I feel like the eyes are basically the same, it's way more about the mouth being different. People stare at the same reference pics and see what they want to see lol.
