Tried a cheap EMF meter last month, got readings that made no sense at all

I picked up a $35 EMF meter off Amazon because I wanted to test the spots in my basement where the WiFi always drops. Figured maybe faulty wiring or something was messing with the signal. Instead I found this weird pulsing spike near the fuse box that happened every 17 seconds like clockwork. Called a buddy who does electrical work and he laughed, said it was probably the old fridge compressor cycling. But the meter was showing 200 milligauss from 6 feet away, way over what any normal appliance should put out. I learned that cheap meters can pick up ghost readings from radio interference and ground loops, so now I do three passes with the meter off and on before I panic. Has anyone else gotten false positives from budget EMF gear and chased a total phantom?

Ha, yeah, that tracks. Cheap gear gives you just enough info to get spooked, but not enough to trust it. It's like checking the weather with a wet finger, sometimes you get a storm warning that's really just a sprinkler. I have a similar thing with my car's tire pressure light, it goes off every fall when the temperature drops, and I've learned it's just the cold air doing its thing, not a slow leak. The real trick is figuring out which gadgets lie to you on a schedule and which ones only lie when they feel like it. Your fridge compressor is probably innocent, the meter is just a drama queen with a bad source of power.

The tire pressure thing is spot on, mine does the exact same dance every October. Reading about how temperature affects pressure sensors actually made me feel less crazy about it. Apparently a 10 degree drop can mess with readings more than people expect, and cheap sensors amplify that. It's wild how these little devices can send you on a wild goose chase for a problem that doesn't exist. Same with my old blood pressure cuff at home, it gives me scary numbers when the batteries get low. Its like they all just make stuff up when they dont get enough juice.
