TIL the way they shuffle ballots in a hand recount can flip a close race, and I watched it happen in a 2022 school board vote
A retired clerk in Kalamazoo showed me how stacking ballots by precinct before recounting changes the pile order, and I'm wondering if anyone else has seen a local race get reversed by nothing more than how the stacks were arranged.
Used to figure hand recounts were about as fair as it gets, like you just count every ballot twice and the truth comes out. Then a buddy who worked a recount in a state rep race back in 2018 told me the order of the stacks can matter more than people want to admit, since the counters get into a rhythm and stuff near the top of a pile gets more eyes on it. Hearing your Kalamazoo story makes me way less sure that a recount is some magic fix, lol.
