TIL my coworker's 'appliance ghost' theory was actually spot on

Back in July of 2022, I had a fridge in my rental that kept tripping the breaker every 3 days. My landlord sent a guy named Dave to look at it, and he just stood there for a minute and said 'it's not the fridge, it's a bad neutral somewhere in the wall, probably from a loose connection years ago.' He didn't even touch the thing. I thought he was nuts, like some kind of conspiracy nut who blames everything on hidden wires. But after he chased it down to a junction box behind the drywall, he found a melted neutral that was barely making contact. He fixed it for $40 in parts and the fridge ran fine for 18 months until I moved. Has anyone else had an electrician or repair guy pull out some wild theory that turned out to be dead on?

Gotta disagree a bit here. That wasn't really a wild theory. Dave just knew how houses are built and where problems hide. Any halfway decent electrician would have done the same thing. The dude literally said "bad neutral" which is about as textbook as it gets. Calling it a ghost or a conspiracy makes it sound like he was guessing. He wasn't.

Our washing machine "ghost" turned out to be a loose wire in the crawlspace.
