PSA: I had to pick between the 'official' story and a deep dive rabbit hole for a local news event
Last month, a water main broke on Maple Street and the city said it was just old pipes. My neighbor was convinced it was a cover for them installing surveillance gear. I spent a whole weekend, maybe 12 hours, digging through old utility maps and council meeting notes online. I chose to follow the paper trail instead of the theory, and it just showed a repair that was delayed three times since 2019. It was boring, but the facts checked out. Has anyone else had a local event where the boring truth was actually harder to find than the wild story?

Three years for a pipe fix, @emerycarr? That's the real crime.

Ever find yourself wishing the conspiracy was real just to make all that research feel worth it?

My buddy spent months digging into some local water treatment thing, convinced there was a cover-up. He had binders full of notes. Turns out it was just years of plain old neglect, like @nancy_butler said about that pipe. The truth was so boring it actually hurt. He said the letdown was worse than finding nothing at all. You want the rabbit hole to lead somewhere amazing, not just a clogged drain.
