Just found out the moon landing footage wasn't the original reels

I was reading this article from a NASA archivist who said the original tapes were wiped and reused for satellite data back in the 70s. Anybody know if that's actually true or just another rabbit hole?

A buddy of mine worked there and said they literally taped over them for weather data.

Taping over sensors for weather data sounds about as reliable as my grandpa's method of checking rain by sticking his hand out the window. Must make for some interesting forecasts, like predicting a blizzard when the tape is just a little loose. At least they're saving money on weather balloons, I guess.
