I spent $400 on a 'secret history' book series before realizing it was just repackaged bunk

The author cited a bunch of broken links and defunct forums as his sources, and the whole thing fell apart when I checked just one of his claims. Anyone else get burned by a fancy looking 'research' package that was just old internet rumors?

That "checking sources before buying" idea is good but it misses the point with this stuff. The whole problem is they build a fancy product to LOOK like real research so you trust it. You're not just checking a source, you're having to prove their whole book is fake, which is the work you paid them to do. It's a total scam because they sell you the answer and the problem at the same time.

I just check the sources before buying now.

Checking sources is a great idea in theory, but it's not always practical. For a lot of everyday stuff, you just don't have the time to deep dive into every company's supply chain. Plus, even good sources can have bad practices that never make it into a report. Sometimes you just need to buy the thing and move on with your day.
