Watching a 20 year old hand float job finally give out

Last month I was resurfacing a patio in Tacoma that my old crew poured back in 2005. Same homeowner, never had a crack until this spring. I pulled up a section of the original float work and it made me miss how we used to bull float by feel, not by laser. My apprentice asked why I kept a magnesium float in the truck and I told him it's like a old friend, you just know when it's right. Any of you still hand finish big slabs or is everyone on the power trowel train now?
