Good question. Tried that once with a patch in the backyard. Ended up with a giant, cracked mess. You need those grooves and a proper base for a reason.

Yeah I used to think that was overkill too, but @johnrobinson is right, skipping the prep work just costs you later.

Totally agree, that prep is the boring but important part. Learned the hard way when my own slab shifted and cracked after a year. Now I just bite the bullet and do it right the first time.
