That old finisher on a job in Austin taught me more than any book.

I was working a big slab pour over on East 6th back in 2017, and this guy named Pete, must have been 70, showed me how to fix a low spot by flicking a little dry mix and troweling it in. He said, 'son, you can't buy that feel, you just got to burn it in over years.' I still think about that when I'm smoothing out a fresh pour. Anyone else have an old timer who gave them one piece of advice that stuck?

In my experience, that flick-and-trowel trick from Pete is a band-aid fix that can cause bigger problems down the road. @tyler492 I've seen it trap moisture under the surface and make the slab spall in a couple years if the mix isn't perfect. Real flatwork is about getting the subgrade right and the mud at the right slump from the truck, not some old-timer's sleight of hand.

Pete also told me to spit in the mix for good luck.

Pete's trick saved me a whole driveway once.
