Showerthought: I switched from a wood float to a magnesium float back in 2011 and never looked back
Back when I was running my own small crew in Amarillo, I had to pick between staying with the old wood floats my dad taught me on or buying a magnesium float for the flatwork. The wood ones were cheap and felt right in my hands, but they soaked up water and wore down fast on big pours. I went with the mag float and it was night and day, it pulled the cream up quicker and the finish came out flatter with way less elbow grease. I remember a 40 by 60 slab out by the lake where the mag float saved me almost an hour of troweling time, and my helper noticed it too. These days you see guys running all kinds of fancy handles and power trowels, and don't get me wrong, the tech is nice. But there is something about learning the feel of a float on wet mud that a machine just can't teach you. Any of you older finishers ever had to make that same call between the old wood and the newer mag?
