Pumice stone trick saved a bad trowel finish in Wichita

I was finishing a 300 sq ft patio last Tuesday and the surface started crusting before I could get the float on it. My foreman walked over with a pumice stone he keeps in his truck and showed me how to knock the high spots down before the final pass. I never thought about using anything but a steel trowel for that, and it totally changed the texture. Anyone else carry pumice or other odd stuff on site for emergency fixes?

Pumice is one of those things you don't think about until you need it, right? I've got a beat-up one living in my truck bed next to the spare gloves. Used it on a curb pour last fall when the aggregate started peeking through and the finish looked like a mess. Just knocking down those little bumps before the final trowel pass saved me from having to grind the whole thing down later. Now I grab it before the finish starts fighting back, not after.
