My brother-in-law, a plumber, called our work 'just pushing mud around'.
He said it over beers after I finished a stamped patio in Boise. It hit different because he builds houses, but doesn't get that a bad finish can ruin his perfect framing. Made me realize we're the last line of defense against water and cracks. Anyone else have to defend the craft to other trades?

Tell me about it. My cousin does electrical work and calls concrete "glorified dirt." His wiring is great until the slab cracks and pulls everything out of square. A bad pour turns their careful work into a real problem fast. We're the ones who make sure their stuff stays put for the next thirty years.

@phoenix625 I've definitely poured a few slabs that looked more like glorified gravel than concrete (my apologies to the electricians who had to work around them). Guess that's why I stick to smaller pads and walkways now.

Actually concrete is more like artificial stone than dirt. The mix design matters a lot, it's not just sand and water. A good slab with the right amount of steel and control joints won't just crack and pull things out of square. Your cousin's problem sounds like they're working on bad foundations, not that concrete itself is the issue. A proper pour done right is one of the most stable things you can build on.
