Just threw out $80 worth of that 'fast set' patch mix from the hardware store

Tried to use it on a small sidewalk repair in Phoenix last week. The stuff set up way too fast, like under 5 minutes, and I couldn't get a decent finish on it. Ended up having to chip it all out and start over with my usual bag mix. Anyone have a go-to patch product that actually gives you some working time?

Actually, ice water can make some mixes set faster, which is the opposite of what you want.

Wait, so my plan to use ice water is actually a terrible idea? That explains the concrete frisbee I made last week... it set up so fast I couldn't even smooth it out.

Yeah, Phoenix heat will absolutely murder any mix that isn't made for it. Those quick-set bags are a total gamble in the summer. I've had way better luck just keeping a bag of standard concrete mix on hand and using cold water, I mean really cold, almost ice water, to slow things down. It buys you those extra few minutes to get the finish right. The pre-mixed stuff just can't handle the extreme dry heat we get here.
