I had to pick between two crews for a 4,000 sq ft warehouse pour in Fresno, and I'm still second guessing it
Last month I bid a 4,000 square foot warehouse slab in Fresno and both my regular guys were booked, so I had two options. Option A was a young crew that just bought a laser screed and quoted me $1.85 a square foot. Option B was an old timer named Roger and his two man crew who wanted $2.40 but have poured more flatwork than anyone in the valley. I went with Roger because the slab spec called for a tight FF/FL number and I didn't want to gamble on guys still learning their machine. We finished it in two days with zero honeycomb and the GC walked it with a straight edge and didn't say a word. Roger charged me exactly what he quoted and even brought his own curing compound. Now I've got another 6,000 footer coming up and I'm wondering if I should give the laser screed kids a shot to save the money. Anyone here worked with a screed crew that was worth the savings?
Went through the same thing last spring and stuck with my old guy too, no regrets. That tight FF/FL spec is where the laser boys usually fall apart, so saving a few grand up front can cost you way more when the GC makes you grind it.
