Showerthought: a guy on the 7:15 train to Philly taught me the best way to spot an empty seat.

He leaned over and whispered, 'Look for the people who put their bag on the seat, then check their phone... they're hoping you won't ask.' Has anyone else picked up a weirdly specific commuter trick like that?

Heard the same trick works on the subway here.

Remember those old turnstiles that jam if you push too hard? Saw a guy use a folded metro card to trip the sensor on a broken one, just walked right through. Makes you wonder if the real trick is spotting which machines are already half broken. They never fix them, so people find ways around. It's less about cheating and more about using the flaws that are already there.

Check the emergency exit doors first, they're often left unlocked or have a broken latch. Look for turnstiles with tape on the sensor or a missing plastic cover, those are usually glitchy. I've seen people just lift the gate on the really old ones if the lock is worn down. The system is so busted that finding the weak spot is just common sense now.
