Just tried standing on the bus instead of sitting. Weird result.
I always grab a seat on the 42 bus downtown. Last Tuesday I decided to stand the whole 25 minute ride. My legs felt more awake when I got off. But my back was killing me from the sudden stops and swaying. Anyone else get a different experience with standing versus sitting on a long bus ride?

Try leaning against the back pole next time instead of just standing flatfooted. Your core will get quite a workout regardless, but it beats those sudden lurches yanking your spine. On second thought, sitting is probably better for your back unless you enjoy testing your lower back's flexibility.

Well said. Leaning on the pole is the only way to survive standing on the subway.

Has anyone else found that leaning on the pole like @michael_craig mentioned actually helps? I tried standing on the 42 bus after reading this and my back was screaming at me too. The sudden stops and starts really do mess with your posture. I think I'll stick with sitting unless I'm only going a few stops. Standing might work better on a smoother route or if you brace yourself right, but for a full 25 minutes it just feels like punishment.
