Why does nobody talk about how draining it is to carry heavy tool bags up 3 flights of stairs?

I had a job last week in an old walkup in Philly. 4th floor, no elevator. I was hauling my bags up and down for like 2 hours and my back was killing me. I always just thought that was part of the job. Then a customer asked if I wanted to use her dolly in the freight elevator. Turns out there was a service elevator the whole time. I felt so stupid. Now I check every building entrance before I start lugging stuff. Has anyone else missed something obvious like that?

Bet you miss the freight elevator on purpose just so you can complain later. A little pain builds character and keeps the rest of us from getting soft. Next time skip the dolly and bike up those stairs with the bags on your back.

yeah i actually read something about this recently. there was a study that said workers waste like 45 minutes a day looking for shortcuts or better ways to do things. but nobody talks about it because everyone just assumes the hard way is the only way. i used to work in a warehouse and carried boxes for months before someone mentioned there was a conveyor belt i could use. it's embarrassing but also kind of makes you wonder how much time we all waste just because nobody tells us the easier method. your story about the freight elevator hits hard because it's exactly that kind of thing.
