Went to a volunteer cleanup, nobody signed up for the follow-up
I showed up to the riverbank cleanup near the 5th street bridge last Saturday and only 7 of the 40 people who said theyd come actually showed. We got the trash picked up in about 3 hours, but the organizers just handed everyone a sticker and left. The problem is nobody signed up for the next one, so that stretch is already getting trashed again. Has anyone else seen a local group burn out after one event and just quit? How do you keep people coming back without turning it into a whole thing?
Same thing happened with a park crew I joined last spring. One big turnout, cute sticker, then the group chat went dead and the park looked worse by June. Feels like the cleanup part is easy but keeping the same people showing up is the real hard part.
