Volunteer board hit 40 regulars after 6 months of small events
I kept pushing a monthly community cleanup in Maplewood and last Saturday we finally had 40 people show up, up from like 7 at the start. Took a few flops like the plant swap that only drew 3 folks, but offering free coffee from a local shop made the difference. Has anyone else found that a tiny perk brings in way more volunteers than any flyer or social post?
Free coffee works because it gives people a reason to actually walk over and talk to someone, not just sign a sheet. What got our numbers up was putting one person at the table whose only job was greeting folks by name and handing out the cups. Standing around with a clipboard scares people off. Make the first 30 seconds feel like a hangout and the rest handles itself.
