Tried to help a neighbor move a couch and it went so wrong

This was last Thursday. My neighbor in apartment 4B asked if I could help get her new couch inside. It was just the two of us. We got it up the stairs okay, but then we hit the door frame. We tried to tilt it every way, but it just would not fit. She kept saying 'just push harder' and I knew that was a bad idea. Sure enough, we scraped a huge piece of paint off the wall and put a tear in the couch fabric. I felt awful. We had to leave it in the hallway for an hour while we figured it out. Ended up calling her brother to help take the door off the hinges. Has anyone else had a simple help job turn into a big mess? What's your go-to move for tight furniture fits?

Oh, the number of times I've been that person saying "just push harder" against all better judgment.

Actually @perry.jessica, sometimes you do just need to push harder and accept a little wall damage.

Nah, that's how you end up with a huge repair bill. A little patience saves the drywall.
