The volunteer list changed overnight and now nobody shows up

Our neighborhood food drive ran smooth for 2 years, we had 14 regulars every Saturday. Then last month the organizer switched to a digital signup sheet with reminders and shifts. First week we had 5 people, this week it was just me and one retiree sorting cans. Did the paper clipboard actually mean more commitment, or did everyone just get burned out at once? Anyone else see a drop off after switching to online scheduling?

Buddy of mine ran a beach cleanup group and the same thing happened, online signups just made it too easy for folks to back out. Paper clipboard meant you looked someone in the eye and they felt bad saying no.
