The food bank sorting rule I fought for 2 shifts finally made sense

I volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul food bank in Tucson and always thought we wasted too much time checking every can for dents. After we sent out a batch that had a swollen tomato sauce can and two families got sick, I finally get why the 3-second check matters. It took us 5 hours to re-sort 14 crates that day, but now I don't skip a single one. Has anyone else had a volunteer rule that seemed dumb until it bit you?
