The difference a street tree makes in 5 years
I helped plant a row of red maples on Maple Street back in 2019. Yesterday I drove through there and those trees are almost 20 feet tall now. The whole block went from looking like a blank strip of concrete to having actual shade and curb appeal. Has anyone else watched a planting project transform a street over time?

and i read this article a while back about how street trees actually lower crime rates in neighborhoods, not just make them look nicer. something about the shade making people want to walk instead of drive, so there's more eyes on the street. plus those red maples you planted probably help with stormwater runoff too, since their roots soak up a ton of water. 20 feet in 5 years is wild though, sounds like they really took off once they got established.

yeah that "eyes on the street" thing is real... my friend in denver said their block got way friendlier after the city put in a row of lindens. people actually sit on their porches now instead of hiding inside. @lilycraig you're spot on about the runoff too, their basement stopped flooding after those roots got going.
